In South Dakota, commercialized casinos are only permitted in tribal casinos
and Deadwood, which is an area that was designated by the State of South Dakota
as a gaming area. The first casino
in Deadwood opened in 1989.
South Dakota’s bars
and taverns are allowed to operate up to 10 video lottery terminals. Those machines are regulated by the
South Dakota Lottery Commission.
South Dakota limits
tribal and Deadwood casino licensees to a maximum of 30 slot machines.
Each licensee may hold up to three licenses.
Blackjack and poker were previously limited to $5 wagers, however, in
late 2000 the law was changed to allow up to $100 per wager. Indian casinos are also subjected to the $100 wager limit.
One interesting
provision within the South Dakota gaming law is that children are usually
allowed into the casino with the supervision of parental guidance until 8:00
p.m. Children are also permitted to
stand next to their parents while they are gambling.
