Missouri has
allowed Riverboat
gambling since
legislation was
passed by the
Missouri
Legislature in
November 1992.
Voters adopted a
statewide
referendum in 1994
to permit slot
machines in
Missouri. Riverboat
gaming vessels may
dock in and city
that borders either
the Mississippi or
the Missouri river
when approved by a
local referendum.
Gaming is only
allowed while the
boat is cruising,
unless the
condition of the
river is deemed
unsafe by the
captain of the
boat, in which can
gaming may occur
while docked.
According to the
law, there is a
$500 loss limit per
passenger per
cruise.
Currently, there
are no limit on the
number of licenses
that may be issued
by the Missouri
Gaming Commission.
The application fee
for a license is
between $15,000 and
$50,000 plus the
costs of the
investigation by
the commission. The
initial license is
valid for a one
year period, after
which there is an
annual fee every
two years of
$25,000. There is
also a 20% tax on
the adjusted gross
revenues.
All suppliers
and distributors of
gaming equipments
are required to be
licensed. The
application fee for
a distributor
license is $10,000
plus the
investigation costs
incurred by the
commission. The
annual license
thereafter is
$5,000 and is
renewable each
year.
