Missouri Gaming Laws

Missouri has allowed Riverboat gambling since legislation was passed by the Missouri Legislature in November 1992. Voters adopted a statewide referendum in 1994 to permit slot machines in Missouri. Riverboat gaming vessels may dock in and city that borders either the Mississippi or the Missouri river when approved by a local referendum. Gaming is only allowed while the boat is cruising, unless the condition of the river is deemed unsafe by the captain of the boat, in which can gaming may occur while docked. According to the law, there is a $500 loss limit per passenger per cruise.

Currently, there are no limit on the number of licenses that may be issued by the Missouri Gaming Commission. The application fee for a license is between $15,000 and $50,000 plus the costs of the investigation by the commission. The initial license is valid for a one year period, after which there is an annual fee every two years of $25,000. There is also a 20% tax on the adjusted gross revenues.

All suppliers and distributors of gaming equipments are required to be licensed. The application fee for a distributor license is $10,000 plus the investigation costs incurred by the commission. The annual license thereafter is $5,000 and is renewable each year.
