Maine Gaming Laws
Maine voters have rejected a plan for a $650 million casino proposed by the Passamaquoddies and the Penobscot Nation in 2003. At that time the voters voted in favor of legalizing slot machines at Bangor Racetrack.

Maine’s Indian Tribes have had difficult times opening casinos because, unlike their Federally recognized tribes counterparts, Maine’s tribes are not covered under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and must instead adhere to Maine’s state laws.

Recently, the Passamaqupddies and the Penobscot Nation have proposed LD 1274, which would allow Indian tribes to operate slot machines in Maine. That legislation is currently being opposed by Governor Baldacci and his administration.
